Uncensored Scandal Interview Leads To China-Wide Arousal
by Thorsten J. Pattberg for the Saker blog
[Take a seat and look over your shoulder. This is hilarious and funny: Everything you knew about China was a Western Umph. “China Studies” is untenable and must die!]
IMAGE 0 Western China Studies, Chinese Religions, and Chinese Philosophy Are Western Fabrications – China has 2000 Years Of Wenming, Ruxue and Sixiang
Interview (Uncensored) by Guancha Network with Dr. Pattberg. The Chinese of course made their pick and changed it. Here is what I really said…
…On New Imperialism And Taiwan Studies
IMAGE 1 Western China Studies Is A Fetish Of The Colonial Past
Guancha: In your opinion, the so-called “China Studies” major in the Western Universities is manufactured and serves as an imperialistic tool. Scholars, experts on China, under the threat or coercion from governments, have to sell their anti-China stances in order to make a living/career.
Dr. Pattberg: China Studies is pure fiction for our Western rulers to control, manipulate, and create the China they want. Of course, it is an imperialistic tool. Think of Taiwan Studies, which is offered at Oxford University in the UK or Tübingen University in Germany. This discipline was invented to facilitate the myth of Two Chinas.
…On How The UK Runs The Biggest Anti-China Racket In The World
IMAGE 2 Shove Your Democracy Up Your Ass Goes Viral in Taiwan
Guancha: In your essay [Shove Your Democracy Up Your Ass], you talked about how the British authority has been cooperating with tens of thousands of people from Taiwan and Hong Kong, in order to provide a false legitimacy to so-called “China Studies” majors in Western universities, and reinforce UK government’s stance on China. Could you explain these efforts in details?
Dr. Pattberg: I encourage you to buy three books for your collection: First, Press Soldiers. It is about how Western journalists subvert and sabotage China. Second, The Xin-Civilization. It is about the Chinese can and cannot do. These two works should stand in every library. And if you really want to be terrified, there is a third, Finis Sinarum. It is about how Peking University and Tsinghua University are run by Americans.
As to the personal question about when I was offered a Hong Kong scholarship, I was at Edinburgh University in 2001. Scotland is a proud nation, but it is part of the United Kingdom. So, of course, China Studies students are sent to Taiwan and Hong Kong, because those are British/American colonies.
When I refused to go to Hong Kong and instead contacted, on my own, Fudan University in Shanghai, and was accepted, my supervisors fumed with rage. I was away in Shanghai and Beijing for two years, at Fudan University and Peking University, and when I returned to the UK in 2004, those two academic years abroad were dismissed. They said (studying in) Chinese mainland was not OK.
…On How Western Academia Is At Full War With China
IMAGE 3 History Shows The Western Powers Will Never Stop Until China Is Dismantled
Guancha: As you point out, the West has been fabricating lies on China through the leverage of their hegemony in global media and narratives. They even see it as a culture war on China with existential consequences. How would the sensible people from around the world respond to this? Professor Zhang Weiwei from Fudan University in China proposed the idea and discourse of “Civilizational State”, which facilitated the breakup of hegemonic status of Neo-Liberalism. What’s your take?
Dr. Pattberg: You mentioned Professor Zhang Weiwei from Fudan University. He is a brave man. See, the West has no concept of wenming. So Western scholars call it “civilization” or “nation”. Wenming is neither. Wenming is guaranteed not invented in the West, haha! Wenming is the China realm and it cannot be translated. Wenming is wenming.
I recently got commented on by political commentators Wu Qina and Wang Mengyuan. They long suspected there was something wrong with Western China Studies, especially all the fabricated lies about Xinjiang, the Confucius Institutes, and even coronavirus and the zero-Covid policy. All I can say is that the West is now terminally sick. And sick people lash out at the world. For example, Washington is planning a war with China. I live in Tokyo, and we have German Eurofighters and US warships here. West Germany and Japan are US vassal states. So the South China sea is a very militarized zone.
The West demands two things from China: Regime change and, at the same time, trade as usual for our Western multinationals. Under such pressure, considering that World War Three has already started with the US-NATO destruction of Russia, how can we expect China scholarship to remain clear-headed and academic? Evidently, academia is now heavily politicized. This leads to reactance.
Let me briefly explain this concept from psychology, because it is so important in international relations: Reactance means that if a person, group, or nation is pressured to behave in a certain way, it will almost invariably do the opposite, out of pure spite. So no matter what Chinese people are telling Western aggressors to “please stop, be reasonable,” the Western aggressors will never stop and will never be reasonable.
Washington or London will never adopt, consider, or even mention Wenming, Tianren-Heyi, Hexie Shehui or any other Chinese alternative worldview, sorry. We tried for decades. Not gonna happen. Read my book about it. It is called Knowledge is a Polyglot.
…On Chinese Students In the Fake UK
IMAGE 4 Getting A Western Degree Is The Ultimate Upgrade For The Chinese
Guancha: By insisting on studying China and sticking to your principles, you’ve been threatened and harassed by the anti-China agencies from UK, US etc, which cost you dearly. Yet, you broke up the obstacles and came to China, eventually earned your PhD degree from Peking University. Would you be willing to share with us the hardship you’ve experienced? What is it that keeps you moving on?
Dr. Pattberg: Everyone has his own survival story. I had two fellow students who committed suicide over Christmas in the past. One was Chinese, a law student. He just jumped off the eighth floor of his Edinburgh University Dormitory. He felt that UK degrees are fake. UK universities expanded into degree factories for Asians. Asians pay any price for a Western degree. So UK universities set up fake 1-year fast-track MA in
Law Backscratching degrees for desperate Chinese. They even have their own dormitories, away from the real British students. My profs warned me that if I went to China, I would destroy my career. China is best studied at Cambridge or SOAS London School, not in Beijing or Shanghai, they said.
Western education is a misnomer. It is not about education, it is about privilege. If you have no affiliation with the West, you are a nobody. So by studying for a “Boshi” degree China, in the eyes of the Western elites, I lowered myself. When I briefly returned to Germany in 2019, my PKU doctoral degree became worthless, so I must stay in Asia permanently, currently I am in Japan.
…On Western Sanctions On Chinese Degrees
IMAGE 5 The West Already Infiltrated Chinese Top Universities
Guancha: Based on your descriptions, let’s say, for a young student in the US or UK, if he/she is interested in China, and seeks a career of studying China, what are the pressure or obstacles from the society, schools and professors? You mention your own experience in waking up from the big lies about China. Yet, many young people in the world, including those in China, are still facing such a challenge. What would be your suggestions to them?
Dr. Pattberg: Do you ask my advice for Western students who would love to come to China and get a Chinese degree? That is not advisable. The EU for example will not accredit your Chinese credentials. So you will have to go with a governmental-approved exchange program. For example, American planners are training their future “China experts” at Schwarzman Scholars (Jewish) at Tsinghua University or at Yenching Scholars (Harvard) at Peking University. Most Western universities have some form of official exchange programs with China, but unfortunately, about 95% of them are just fake ‘Chinese for Foreigners’ language courses, so be careful.
If you really want to study like a Chinese person at a Chinese University, you will immediately have American CIA, British M-6, or German BND agents blowing up your neck. I describe how it works in my books. Journalists are in this, too. My Institute a Peking University was run by the Harvard professor Tu Weiming. He had briefly worked for the CIA before, which is unavoidable in the USA as a Taiwanese Chinese.
He invited other Harvard professors, Ezra Vogel, Roderick MacFarquhar, and so on, also with CIA background. It is not a secret. He hired me, accidentally, because I was also at Harvard and because his latest wife was a Tiananmen activist and thought I could use money they got from Swiss-German Catholics (Christians) to do the German translations for them. It is not about studying China, but about how to crack China and take over.
Such activities are normal here, and the PKU deans and dons know this. I guess it is best to keep your enemy close, but that close? See, I am studying “language”, alright. And “language” is sacred to all governments, but especially to the US government, to which language is a weapon of US global hegemony. The Americans obviously want the world to speak American (English). No Chinese loanwords!
So when I published the Shengren – Avove Philosophy and Beyond Religion, these silly Harvard people canceled me. Over 700 Western publishers and media rejected my articles. The Economist magazine plagiarized it, but never mentioned the source. It is surreal, but they have that much clout. So this power clique is probably my deadliest match-up, but we shall see.
The Chinese still have a lot of winning chances, with their 30 million diaspora and above-average intelligence (compared to Europeans). But for the next two or three generations or so, I reckon, all our Chinese scholars will tremble in fear of the Americans. It is the American professors and journalists who create the heroes and martyrs for China, not the Chinese.
Real scholarship is still possible, but you will probably go underground and live in abject poverty. If you want to avoid cold-blooded politics and power-grabbers, you should probably avoid Beijing, Taipei, and Hong Kong.
I would go as far as to say that normal unbiased scholarship is now almost impossible. The West says NO to Chinese names, brands, and concepts. I said it before, I say it again, and I hope you’ll print it: Western ‘China Studies’ is wrong, incorrigible, and has to go. BUY THE SHENGREN.
…On Future Misunderstandings and Hostilities
IMAGE 6 Chinas Only Strategy Is To Lay Low And Survive
Guancha: With China embracing the world, the Chinese government, media and scholars face one major headache in communicating with the outside, i.e. how to convey their ideas and messages precisely. Sometimes, due to differences in cultural background or narratives, it may even create misunderstandings or hostilities. As someone who comes from Germany and studies China, understands China, what’s you take on this problem? What are your advice to both parties (the Chinese side, and the foreign side)?
Dr. Pattberg: Thank you for this question, which is the most important for the Chinese government and media. First, you must buy this book: The Human Hierarchy – With an Essay about a Place for China. You must understand World History, how it works, and who creates it. After that reading, you will understand all those Chinese difficulties and Western hostilities your just so alluded to.
My advice is just this: survival. Just try to stay alive. Everything the West tells China is delusion and lies. Take “democracy”. It obviously didn’t work for the Greeks or the Romans. Hitler Germany was a democracy. The White House is a democracy, haha. What a rubbish. Under democracy, the Americans enslaved the Negroes, wiped out the Indians, and conquered the Mongolian races. Think about that. Democracy means whatever reason they kill you for.
Only a thorough information campaign throughout humanity can save us. There are 300,000 Chinese students in the USA and 100,000 Chinese students in the UK. Obviously, they are incapable of producing a work like Shengren. So either something is wrong with them or they didn’t buy The Human Hierarchy. Britain ruled India with one person. The Crown. We have 6 scholars from Harvard who run China. The West will never tolerate Chinese media. All is blocked in the West. Don’t ask me. Wake up. And do what you have to do. Persevere！

Comparing the original to Guancha’s, it seems they removed the last question altogether. Other differences include especially removing mentions to other countries (Germany, Japan, Russia) along the text. They also removed the reference to the Chinese diaspora, though they kept the mention of ABC difficulties.

Excellent summary Iyy, thanks!!!
The subject of Chinese Religions is simply a regional version of religious studies, so the assertion that it is merely a Western fabrication is false. In respect of Chinese Philosophy, it’s true that there is no clear dividing line, however at one time it was a genuine and reputable subject, whose most notable expert was Profesor A.C. Graham.
Unfortunately, the rest of this article is quite correct and Western academia has indeed ‘lost the plot’, which is why all the genuine Sinologists and Orientalists either retired early or became private scholars. It would contravene the moderation policy if I were to fully express my personal feelings on this subject, but suffice to say that I have nothing but contempt for my former colleagues. They will reeceive their karmic ‘just desserts’ in due course along with the rest of the craven and degenerate British establishment.
The Anglo’s have been using the media and the control of the Education system in the West to forward their propaganda for Centuries. This article on China really drove home the point. Thanks. Not sure if this link is allowed but these folks have done an extraordinary job of digging into the roots of their control.
They may not be so good at winning real Wars but they’re the masters of spinology.
Thank you for this article. I’ve just ordered The Human Hierarchy–with an Essay about a Place for China.
thesaker.is website is my first choice in reading about geopolitical affairs, and I pretty much rely on the links to other sites that are provided here. I’ve watched as more and more of my family members, relatives, and friends discuss their familiarity with all things saker, martyanov, gonzalo, batiushka, pattberg, etc.
I am not so alone in my little world anymore. Saker’s appeal to other is built on the solid foundation of rock versus sand. Much appreciation for the insight and wisdom presented here by the various writers, and of course, the folks who comment.
May this violent world find peace in 2023.
The situation with China studies in the UK and other Western countries is no different from that of Russia and Slavonic Studies in the same countries. The greatest ‘sin’ for the Western Establishment is to ‘go native’, that is, for students to start looking at reality through Non-Western eyes. The reason for China Studies or Russia Studies in Western countries is purely to train spies, teachers for spies and anti-Russia and anti-China diplomats and journalists. As regards Russia Studies in the UK, the works of Martin Sixsmith are typical.
A helpful comment Batiushka: Your analysis reminds me of once reading that Western Universities were originally established with the aid of the ruling Monarchs. Their intent being to organize the best minds of the realm in service to the interest of the Monarch via the institution of the universities. So the universities from the outset were structured to be a support structure for the power imperative of the Monarch.
Your point proves that over the centuries nothing politically has changed in regards to the role of the Universities in relation to the power drives which govern the Western Sates. Now they are intellectual agents of capitalist imperialism. Intellectual fakes and toadies. But then how could the ego driven power structures of the West have allowed for anything else. Thought is power.
I am so glad I am but a humble worker who did not get my head bent out of shape by become a “graduate.”
@ Snow Leopard
and another helpful comment from you. To that i can add my own feelings on the subject as I know how badly ignorant and fooled they are and have been on the subject of climate change which has nothing to do with industrial pollution but everything to do with the pollution of sin. I believe one guy in particular after coming across my take on climate change actually said this guy has turned education back a thousand years!
start here on a proper education on the subject about what is really going on.
Universities need to return to the queen of all studies and pay far greater attention to St. Mathew 7:24-27
because they are indeed building their lives on sand which the rain from heaven will seep away and with it their entire lives and countries as we are in the process of seeing.
That’s right. The same goes for Serbia. A few years ago, I followed the facebook page of the Faculty of Slavic Studies in Ghent. I was stunned by the daily avalanche of posts on their wall that I would describe as anti-Russian and anti-Serb propaganda: the usual nonsense about Putin, endless commemoration messages about Srebrenica and condemnations of the evil Serbs, etc. Students liked this bullshit like good sheep. I responded to posts with “xD” to distinguish myself from these assholes until I was banned without explanation or appeal. Another sin is making fun of the brainwashed’s myopia.
Thanks you Saker for this article.
This explains why the US is so tone deaf in dealing with non-USians, and why we have to rely on our military and CIA for our foreign policy successes. We don’t have the ability to do otherwise.
I have been puzzled by why the speeches of the Russian leaders have been so wise and practical and so detail oriented. Apparently they learn facts and consequences, while our own politicians and leaders only know our self serving propaganda. Our leaders do not know the facts, and they cannot talk about realities in other nations because they do not know what they are.
So after a decade of very effective and destructive sanctions against Iraq in the 90s, and Shock and Awe against them in the 00s, USians innocently wondered “Why do they hate us so much?”.
Pattenburg is right. At university I did my dissertations on the idiom and ideology of ‘oriental despotism’, a sort of history, or line of descent of a quite ancient and recurring notion of ‘us’ freedom loving republicans vs ‘them’ who suffer under asiatic autocracies. Of course they need to be ‘liberated’. They might have produced fine civilisations but they are lacking the most important spiritual achievement: liberty. Thus they stand in need of our missionaries. This is why we have ‘oriental studies’ programs. My starting point was Edward Said’s conception of orientalism. It spoke volumes to me. But while he provided many instances of what he was trying to talk about he basically lacked a theory. I thought this was actually possible and proceed to try to spell it out. It’s essentially the ‘foreign policy’ analysis of Aristotle’s constitutional axioms: ‘slavery is natural’ followed by ‘man is by nature a political animal’. This is not the place to go into the whole thing but I tried to argue that this deeply entrenched attitude that animates everything, or most everything Pattenburg is saying, proceeds from recyclings of an old line of ideological thinking. Supposedly it’s about ‘them’ but it’s really about ‘us’. To cut a long story short it defames ‘oriental despotism’ in order to make the world safe for oligarchy. They fear that one of Michael Hudson’s Mesopotamian monarchs with spoil their debt bondage ‘rule of law’ gambits. But that said, I just want to register my agreement with Dr. Pattenburg. In the 30 years or so since I worked on this stuff I have found NO chinks in the armour. I have tried many times. Those who are schooled in these ‘oriental studies’ programs cannot be communicated with. Communication is impossible and this is a civilisation wide phenomena. We really are headed for war.
That viral-in-China cartoon is rather hard to find, so here’s a link:
On the contrary, I see NATO self-destruction and the rise of a multi polar world. The combined West is a has-been, reduced to hiding behind naive and clay moldeble guidos, zelenskys like buffoons.
On the contrary, I see NATO self-destruction and the rise of a multi polar world. The combined West is a has-been, reduced to hiding behind naive and clay moldable guidos, zelenskys like buffoons. Nothing has changed, only the opponent is a military peer and they are confused. We have been here before, African studies, oriental studies etc
Articles like this are most likely well circulated throughout Asia, or are so common knowledge there that it is old news for them
It certainly sounds like a call to arms to achieve exactly the goals that you describe. The complete and total disrespect that this article attributes to western academia towards Chinese culture is astounding.
‘Under such pressure, considering that World War Three has already started, with the US-NATO destruction of Russia, . . . . . . ‘.
You mean the US-NATO destruction of Europe or Russia’s destruction of NATO.
As a Chinese, I have to say there’s a lot of people in China believe in western. Guanchazhe is viewed as most radical and nationalism media, many Chinese sneer it, consider it as a media sell toxic nationalism for money, even though guancha have to delete some sentence in patternburg’s talk that might irritate someone. Western has done a good job in “peaceful evolution”. Base on what I see on Internet, the same thing happen in Russia society. Hopefully, the central government of Russia and China isn’t fooled, but it’s still dangerous, since the academy and intellectual is infiltrated.
“Hopefully, the central government of Russia and China isn’t fooled, but it’s still dangerous, since the academy and intellectual is infiltrated.”
If what you say is true, then China is in a perilous situation indeed. I am not surprised at “Western infiltration” into the Chinese academia. This “Western infiltration” into the minds of intellectuals and youths via the auspices of so-called “academic exchanges” is the US/”collective West” most powerful weapon, far more effective than any NATO military weapons. Part of Chinese intellectual class invariably becomes China’s ruling elites, the rest would play influential roles in society and youths are the most easily manipulated to be Washington’s beck and call.
I don’t think there’s any need to worry if you adopt this rule of thumb principle – There’s a 99.9% chance that any American in China (including, no especially, 2nd generation Chinese Americans purportedly returning home) works for the CIA directly or indirectly.
I’d bet the Chinese know the rank of almost every Western operative down to their pet dog’s name.
The US (CIA) have wasted a lot of resources and could never crack China, Russia or Iran. Much easier however for Russians or Chinese to usurp one another, simply because in the border regions of these countries you couldn’t determine with certainty that the Chinese looking guy isn’t actually Russian.
The CIA can front Western academia but even the janitor in the American Chinese establishments are smarter geopolitically than the CIA Country Head of Operations.
And then there is India Studies, African Studies, Russian studies……
Being a regular reader of Thorsten‘s articles, the content wasn’t a surprise, but the interview needs a little more of an introduction, conclusion, and outlook to better understand how he sees these developments.
That is one of the most repulsive and racist images I have ever seen.
@ Mr Cracker
The images are indeed repulsive and racist but they were probably supposed to reflect Western elites and academia true “estimation” of Chinese culture and civilization , or perhaps at least the narrative about China /Chinese culture that the West wants non-Chinese and Chinese people alike to believe- the theme of this article. The images are not a reflection of the author’s views, rather they reflect those of people who believe Western “China studies ” narratives about China and Chinese civilization/culture. That’s my interpretation.
The author is kinda “based” , and I quite like him being so. Saying it as he thinks it is without too much self-censorship, whether we agree or disagree, approve or disapprove. A few commenters labeled his views ‘racist’ in his past contributions but I think they misunderstand the author. We humans are tribal. Race/ethnicity – whatever we view of it – is part of our tribal “reality” -used and abused in politics and rhetoric. The author cuts off all that woke nonsense and just say it as it is. And I appreciate that more than woke sweet talks which equals hypocrisy.
I myself am ethnic Chinese. I have read so many anti China comments by some Westerners and in their eyes, we Chinese and our civilization are just like those repulsive images.
Excellent answer, Sinotibetan!
Thanks (though I’m not really sure how someone can read the accompanying article and not get that)
Yeah, this whole topic Thorsten is covering was completely new to me. No one in the news media is even remotely bringing it up.
The Anglo-American Empire has gone from imperialist oppressor directly to “liberator“ without ever stopping to say “sorry!“ Thorsten‘s first-hand reports are an invaluable source to understand how something like that works.
Survival is a low-minded goal for a capable heir of sweetness and immortality.
Advanced schooling is a function of government for at least two reasons:
1- cadres of professionals in the several fields — medicine, theology, war-fighting (engineering), industry, pedagogy — is a public good, and
2- most of the population lack means to support themselves, the student, while they advance-educate for a life executing inside one of those professions.
Since advanced schooling is a function of government, caviling about government influence in academe is bootless.
If institutions meant to provide advanced schooling are not producing the necessary professional cadres, then citizens themselves must find ways to do that, to include forming fresh political parties to redirect government support away from schools not doing their job and towards schools which do.
I think Russia is doing quite well schooling citizens of many countries, including The USA, that swooning over sodomy and abortion — along with their intellectual and moral baggage, aka “woke culture” — ill-befits the heirs of sweetness and immortality.
Interesting video for anyone that would like to visit China. Made by foreigners living (happily it seems) in today’s China:
12 best places to visit when China opens
I like the image. It left a lasting and intense understanding of how much China feels disrespected by the West.
I also apply this to Russians when I read blogs and posts by so many USians calling Russians orcs. Or the spiteful and insulting responses of Biden and other western leaders to Putin’s call for a 36 hour ceasefire. Or many other times when western leaders have been disrespectful of the rest of the world. I keep this image in the back of my mind as a reminder of how our disrespect is taken.
And right now our nation is doing everything it can do to maximize the blowback from this.
