A reader recently asked me why I have not posted any maps of the military situation in the Ukraine, and that is a fair question which I will answer below.
There are a few reasons for this, but the main and most obvious one is this: unlike the first month or two of the SMO, there are very few changes worth showing on a map. That is NOT to say that there are no changes on the frontlines, there are, plenty, but they just don’t translate into nice looking maps.
A recent post on Moon of Alabama quoted what appears to be a leak from the Ukrainian command and which I will repost here:
Ukrainian channels are discussing what might be a leaked data from AFU General Staff:
– The AFU are only at 43-48% strength
– medical workers at their limit
– small arms and armor are not enough
– 191 thousand soldiers were killed and wounded (only AFU, not including others)
– there is not enough hydraulics and liquid nitrogen for M777 howitzers
– no one cares about the missing – there are no statistics
– the equipment transferred by the West is running out
– Western weapons are operated by amateurs, since there are no qualified specialists
– no way to repair weapons on the spot due to the lack of spares and specialists – everything is sent to Poland
BTW, even with this dire report, I would caution against predicting a decisive break in morale. As with Peski, the walking wounded are sent straight back into the trenches
I would just add here that Peski has been taken.
But the key factoids here are “The AFU are only at 43-48% strength” and “191 thousand soldiers were killed and wounded (only AFU, not including others)“.
Figures might change from country to country, and it all depends on the type of warfare which is being conducted, but the rule of thumb I was taught is that any unit which loses over 30% of its strength is not capable of fulfilling its theoretical combat missions. Now, in history, there are plenty of examples of units with 30% or even more losses, but such units can only hold their ground, not operate an orderly withdrawal nevermind a counterattack. The eventual outcome is always the same, eventually such units collapse and disappear (dead, prisoner or escape).
Put otherwise, at this current stage of the war, statistics such as the one above tell the story, maps don’t.
That being said,
The truth is that the Ukrainian forces in the Donbass have been in a de-facto operational cauldron since the first week of the SMO. That is not the result of any special Russian military move, but a factor of geography. Simply put, the eastern Ukraine is a gigantic cauldron. True, it as not a locked cauldron, meaning that the Ukrainian side still could move forces into and out of the cauldron, but it was already “locked by fire” meaning that Russian forces could, and did, attack the forces moving in and out with devastating effectiveness.
Quick reminder: the Ukrainians, supported by billions of dollars from the combined West did have eight years to prepare very strong fortifications along the towns and cities they controlled before the SMO. Maybe somebody expected the Russians to move in frontally, carpet bomb the Ukie-controlled Donbass (as the USA would do) and then frontally attack taking huge casualties in the process. The Russians, wisely, did not oblige. Instead, they chose to slowly grind down the Ukrainian defenses.
These tactics did, by the way, result in quite a few towns and villages being liberated by Russia (Izum, Peski and others), and quite a few tactical “cauldrons” which eventually were absorbed. But, again, the maps did not reflect the nature of what was taking place.
One question I get a lot is: how come the Russian can’t even stop the shelling of Donetsk from, say, Avdeevka? They have a much stronger and larger artillery force and they have very good counter-battery capabilities, so what is the problem here?
Simple, the Ukrainians position their artillery right next to buildings occupied by civilians. So when a Ukrainian mortar, howitzer or MLRS fires at Donetsk or Makeevka, the Russians DO see where it fired from, but they cannot simply reply with a volley of their own, because that would be killing tens if not hundreds of innocent civilians. That would also give the West the “Russian massacre” they so badly wanted in Bucha. So, instead of firing back, the Russians then refine their firing data, which not only takes time, but also allows the Ukrainians to move, not necessarily by much, just a few tens or hundreds of meters, sometimes just on the other side of a building.
So the Russians decided that moving in slow makes much more sense than to frontally storm the Ukrainian fortifications. This is better for both the LDNR and Russian forces and it is much better for the civilians.
Look, why do you think that the entire civilian infrastructure of, say, Kiev or Kharkov is fully functioning? If you really sincerely believe that the Russians could not destroy it on day 1 of the SMO, you might as well stop reading and never revisit this blog again. For the rest, here is the truism which really explains it all

What do I mean by that?
Here is the basic US war plan:
- Attack a basically defenseless country
- Achieve air supremacy (in the absence of any modern air defenses)
- Fire a large amount of cruise missiles, followed by massive air strikes
- If that is not enough, deliberately target and destroy the entire civilian infrastructure
- Then send in ground forces whose basic tactic is this: advance and shoot defenseless people, and when meeting any resistance, call in an airstrike. Then continue.
- Declare victory and leave (ideally while leaving a comprador puppet regime in control)
The result is well over a million dead in Iraq, the total devastation of Libya, the massive bombing of Serbian civilians in Bosnia, Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro and Kosovo, etc. etc. etc.
The Russians simply reject that “logic” on moral and pragmatic grounds. Remember the #6 above! That is *not* a viable option for Russians.
Historically, genocide has ALWAYS been the Western way of war, this is especially true of the British and the US Americans. You don’t have to believe me, simply read this book: The First Way of War: American War Making on the Frontier, 1607–1814 by John Grenier, who retired from the U.S. Air Force in 2009 after a twenty year career in which he attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and served two tours as a professor at the Air Force Academy. He currently serves as the senior professor in American military history for Norwich University’s on-line Masters of Art in Military History (MMH) program. Really, I mean it, get his book, read it, and lose any naive illusions you might have about “Western democracy” and how “liberals” wage war on others.
Another question I get is this: why do the Russian not bypass the Ukronazi towns and villages in the Donbass and push on deeper inside the Ukraine? The answer is simple: because that would place Russian forces in between the still existing Ukrainian positions which the Russians are slowly grinding down now and the Ukrainian forces in the Central Ukraine. It is hardly surprising that the Russians do not want to have their forces fighting on two fronts, one to the West and one to the East. So what about the famous “deep armor operations” or the use of battalion tactical group as a tactical-operational maneuver group? These are all parts of a regular, full-scale, combined arms operation, yes, but the SMO is NOT, repeat, NOT a regular combined arms operation. One example, when the Russians initiated their SMO the Ukrainians had a pretty substantial numerical superiority over the Russians, combined with specific military technological elements (such as advanced secured communications) which the LDNR forces did not have at all, and which the Russian military did have, but not down to the same subunit levels as the Ukrainians. What do we see today? The numerical superiority is gone, and the advanced technologies given to the Ukronazis by the West have only made things more difficult for the Russians, but failed to affect the outcome.
And, of course, the “favorite” one: you (and others) have said many times that Russia could and would defeat the Ukraine in days, a few week max. So now do you admit that you were totally wrong?
First, let’s begin with the assumption of that question, that is to say that Russia did not defeat the Ukraine in days or weeks. Is that even true?
I would argue that is is not. The Russians *DID* successfully basically disable the Ukrainian armed forces in the first few days and weeks of the war: almost the entire Ukrainian air force was destroyed and so were much of the Ukrainian air defenses. As for the ground forces, they have failed to execute a single effective counter-attacks, at most they claimed that every Russian retreat was a result of their counter-attacks, but let me ask a simple question here: if those counter-attacks were successful, where is the result??? Nothing, well, other that the utterly fictitious fairy tales coming out of Kiev, of course. And since Kiev has been wall-to-wall lying about everything from Day 1 of the SMO, how can anybody take their grandiose statements seriously?
So what really happened?
What happened is that the untied West decided to throw its full military might behind the Nazi regime in Kiev. Not only have BILLIONS of dollars worth of equipment been made available to the Ukrainian forces, there were also THOUSANDS of “volunteers” sent to the Ukraine to support the Ukronazi forces (see chart of the right, click here for higher resolution. Quick translation of the main terms: Страна: country; Прибыло: arrived; Уничтожено: destroyed; Убыло: departed; Всего: total).
Last, but most certainly not least, the US and NATO are making use of all their C4ISR capabilities in support of the Ukronazi forces. In fact, it would be accurate to say that the US+NATO have now taken full control of all the military operations in the Ukraine (they have also presided over the total crackdown on any and all forms of internal Ukrainian opposition!).
Once this is understood, let me ask you three simple questions:
- Have I or anybody else declared that Russia would militarily defeat the combined forces of the US+NATO in days or weeks?
- How long would YOU estimate it would take the Russians to achieve such a goal?
- Do you really not see that IN SPITE of that massive and total support of the West, Russia is well on her way to do just that, to defeat not only the best and biggest proxy force in US history, but also all the efforts of the combined West to defeat Russia militarily and economically?
If you did not see this, say, even one month or two ago, I could understand. But if you STILL don’t smell the coffee, then I declare you hopeless, encourage you to stop reading this article and stay away from this blog :-)
Seriously, if the combined West had left the Ukronazi regime in Kiev to its own devices “Ze” would have had to capitulate about 10 days into the SMO, if only to spare the lives of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians.
Did the Russians expect such a massive reaction from the West? The term “expect” is very misleading. That is not how these things work. Operational and strategic plans are not based on a single scenario which you “hope” will materialize. Here are also two things which we should always remember:
- It is the job of the intelligence agencies and the operations planning departments to prepare and model for as many possible scenarios (or scenarii?) as reasonably imaginable.
- Operational and strategic plans do not deal with tactical issues and they CONSTANTLY change depending on a feedback and decision making loop.
One example: Putin admitted during a TV interview that when the Russians moved into Crimea he had placed Russian nuclear forces on maximal alert. Does that meant that anybody in the Kremlin or the General Staff “expected” the US to nuke Russia? Of course not! But they DID consider that possibility and took the needed action to try to prevent it.
Same here. I am very confident that the Russians were fully prepared for the West’s insane and, frankly, suicidal reaction to the SMO. In fact, that “maximal” response was one of the MANY contingencies which the Russians must have prepared for. As a former intelligence analyst, I can tell you that military analysis does look at as many options as possible and then the operational planning folks make their own preparations for any contingency.
It is now abundantly clear that the West is determined to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian. Hence the truly idiotic order given to the best and most capable Ukrainian forces to not engage in a mobile defense but to hold their ground in the Donbass until they are totally destroyed.
Furthermore, it is also abundantly clear that the Western countries are willing to destroy not only its own economies, but the entire international financial system to try to hurt Russia (and China) as much as possible.
In other words, Russia is not engaged in a war against the Ukraine, but against the entire united and consolidated West.

How long will this war last?
I cannot answer that because the answer depends entirely on: how suicidally stupid the leaders of the AngloZionist Empire are?
The Ukrainian forces in the eastern Ukraine have no hopes for an orderly retreat anymore, so they will be destroyed. How soon? I don’t know, that depends on the folks in the trenches and how strong a grip the Nazis have over that force.
Will there be a Ukrainian counter-attack towards Kherson? I sure hope not.
Why? Because currently the Ukrainian forces are dug in inside the city of Nikolaev, and if they decide to attack, they will not only have to get into their pre-battle order formation outside the protective confines of the city, but then they will also have then cross a mostly empty plain. In other words, it will be a massacre.
Might they still try? Sure! ALL the orders given to the Ukrainian forces by the USA+NATO are de facto suicidal and make no military sense. No Neocon will ever give a damn about more massacred Ukrainians.
What else could the Ukrainians do?
Mostly, what they have been doing so far, including:
- Massacring as many civilians in the liberated areas as possible, including with the use of banned weapons (anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions).
- Organize effective terrorist attacks not only in the liberated areas of the Donbass, but also inside Russia (that the Ukrainians have proven pretty good at)
- They might conduct further attacks against Russia, Crimea and the Crimean bridge. None of them will make any military difference or even have much of an impact, but it will be good PR, especially with the full support of the AngloZionist propaganda machine aka “the free press”.
- They are trying hard to bomb the nuclear power station in Zaporozhie. The power plant at Chernobyl might become a target again. Finally, the Ukronazis still have access to plenty of spent nuclear waste which they could use as a “dirty bomb” against their own population and blame Russia (think of it as a “nuclear Bucha”).
- The steady flow of fixed and rotary wing aircraft from Poland, Romania and other countries will continue, giving the Ukronazi propaganda the illusion that Russia does not have air superiority over the entire Ukraine.
There is also a very real possibility that Poland and Hungary might move into the western Ukraine to “protect” their nationals. They have, so far, refrained from doing so, at least openly, probably because US/NATO commanders do not want to risk a Russian strike on NATO forces (even these idiots Biden and Stoltenberg have publicly said that!). However, if done intelligently, Poland and Hungary might well obtain by entirely non-official channels, a Russian promise to “look away” and not take any action. Why? Because Russia has no need whatsoever for these territories and because Russia will be more than happy to let the Poles and Hungarians deal with the Ukronazi nutcases of the western Ukraine.
I hope that the above answers at least some questions you might have had.
I will mention one last thing: while the collapse of the international financial system is already well underway, its effects have, so far, not been fully felt, most definitely not in the USA and not even fully in the EU. Once the magnitude of this self-inflicted disaster become absolutely undeniable, not even by the Neocon-run “free press” things in the West will began to change politically. So now is the time to wait and see, not speculate.

I am sorry but again I think you are doing everything possible to explain the inexplicable. Namely why Russia is extending the suffering of civilians by not more decisively terminating this ‘conflict’? Russia has maintained air superiority over Ukraine since pretty much the beginning. Withdrew from a lot of the conquered territory in the north. And while we know that Russia does not operate like the US it does not explain the month long stalement in the east with a reduced and demoralized Ukrainian army.
While I know it is difficult to question or criticise Russia on this site I think even your own analysis from the beginning of the operation predicted a completely different outcome, this cannot be denied and is an objective truth. So why are we witnessing this stalled conflict?
To me this looks like a deliberate extension of a war to deepen the economic pain of sanctions that the west has inflicted on itself. Western Europe will soon find itself strapped of ressources to produce the goods it needs to export to maintain its economies afloat (especially the northern European economies). While one can label this stupidity, I call it an intentional move. Too much has transpired in recent months that make no rational sense to continue labelling these decisions mere ‘lack of foresight’ or ‘stupidity’, it is just a pity that few people dare to see it for what it is. I suspect the main problem for the Russians is that they do not have air superiority. The airspace is contested. The Russians have a substantial measure of control over the airspace, but enough of Ukraines air defenses remain up – with the significant help of US AWACS and other ECM assets. AWACS provides early warning to Ukraine Air Defense saving them from having to keep radars on. This plus skillful handling by Ukraine has made complete suppression of Ukrainian air defense impossible.
This limits the effectiveness of Russian air power particularly when it comes to interdicting communications behind the front lines and in suppressing what remains of Ukrainian artillery and tracking down the famous HIMARS.
Thus the Russians are operating with greatly reduced support from the air.
It may also be that as long as Ukraine is willing to send reinforcements into hopeless battles, Russia is content to target them with artillery.
The big question is which side has time on their side. I have been on the “time favors the Russians” side of that question. But in war it seems like delaying decision always increases the risk of surprise outcomes.
So far, Russia holds the escalation card. I.e. the tempo of operations is mostly dictated by Russians while the Ukrainians and the West react.
Until that changes in some way, I do not see Russian going on a rampage.
Lastly, a long war very much suites its main organizer behind the ocean. The longer the war the more EU will become dependent on the US, whether they like it or not, and thus the better for the US.
At times one has to wonder who was the main target of this conflict. Everyone says China with Russia standing in the way. But reality says a (final) subjigation of European Union would make a lot more sense as that is what is happening. Kinda like the Wraith “taking care” of their feedstock safety …

That thought has crossed my mind often. I don’t have enough insight into US/NATO – China relations to imagine an answer, but the question has occurred to me a lot.
Think about it. This war is happening for one reason only, that being US/NATO’s hellbent determination to turn the Ukraine into a military stronghold on the RF’s borders. For US/NATO, the benefit of achieving such a geostrategic position is that, in future bilateral relations, America could exert historically unprecedented coercive leverage over Russia.
In other words, if US/NATO wins this war, it can use its position in the Ukraine to bully Russia into subordinating its foreign policy to that of the United States. That’s US/NATO’s ultimate objective.
But that raises the question of why, exactly, is achieving that influence over Russia so important to America? After all, the US and its allies have known since 2007 that staying the course regarding the Ukraine runs the risk of a terrible, bloody, ruinous, conventional war in that country. Maybe even worse. Yet in spite of knowing this risk, US/NATO steamed full speed ahead, triggering the 2014-15 Donbass War and ultimately forcing Russia to invade the Ukraine as a defensive option of last resort.
I can’t believe that anyone in Washington DC or Brussels really believes that Russia is, was, or will be a “threat” to America or Europe. Therefore, US/NATO aggression against Russia via the Ukraine doesn’t serve a defensive purpose for the West.
This line of thinking (that I’ve outlined here) leaves me wondering, perhaps America wants to subdue and neutralize Russia in order to eliminate the latter as a potential Chinese ally in an expected US vs China showdown a little later in the 21st century? Is that what Atlantic Alliance foreign policy hawks are thinking? Might this explain why, to them, the Ukraine is worth sacrificing such enormous blood and treasure?
If so, there’s an huge potential downside to US/NATO’s decision to make this penultimate geostrategic gamble. That’s the possibility that the West will lose this conflict. The consequences of a full-scale, humiliating US/NATO withdrawal from the Ukraine could be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back,” so to speak. Tony Blair himself admitted as much when he recently said the West’s looming defeat in the Ukraine will mark the beginning of the West’s irreversible decline in world affairs, and the true beginning of China’s ascent.
Yes, that is the, by now, “conventional” interpretation. It assumes an (eventually idiotic) offensive strategy of acquiring new/additional dominions.
What is my point is that sometimes simple explanations are the right ones.
What if we assume this conflict’s objective is primarily to shore/secure the ALREADY CONTROLLED dominions i.e. the EU and thereabouts. Well, under that assumption the current (as in 2005-now) strategy actually makes a LOT of sense.
Or do we keep believing the (real) strategists in the US are idiots?
I’ll tell you the reason GW. Energy and resources. Russia controls about one third of the World’s resources. History repeats itself. Why did Germany start the Eastern Front during WW2 ? – to get at Russia’s oil reserves because Germany had none of their own and relied on synthetic oil from coal at the time. Same reason Japan attacked the Indonesian Archipelago during WW2 – for their oil reserves, again because Japan had none of their own and oil was being embargoed by the US/UK at the time.
For Russia, better to have a war now on Ukraine land than on Russian land tomorrow. Plus Russia has all the energy and resources to beat Western Europe in any war. On top of that, Russia has a strong and stable leadership. Time wise, Russia can wait till after Winter has softened Western Europe’s resolve.
The USA is in the process of losing control of Europe. “If we can’t have it, nobody else can have it either”
It’s a scorched earth policy (economically and maybe eventually militarily, but the outcome is clear Europe is screwed.

It is not that crude, it is just standard “domino theory”: east Germany is the first domino, then Poland and Hungary and Romania, then Ukraine, and then the Russian Federation itself, and finally China:
* Up to several years ago the Russian Federation was just considered by the USA elites as a convenient fake threat to justify bigger MIC spending, so to keep it as a fake threat they refused to normalize relations with it.
* Then the USA elites started thinking that they had a real threat, and it was China, that would soon able to inherit the leading role in the global market that the USA elites had created.
* Therefore the USA elites decided that the Russian Federation was no longer useful as a fake threat, and decided to “normalize”, in the usual way: surround, isolate, breakup.
* The war aims of the USA elites against the Russian Federation is to be “invited” to build a chain of CIA/DOD military and biowarfare bases on the northern and western borders of the PRC, from which to train, fund and arm large numbers of “freedom fighters” insider the PRC, “prometheism” but applied to the PRC.
* To be “invited” to build those bases there has to be regime change in the RF and that was and still is the aim of the 2014 proxy-war of aggression by Ukraine in the Donbas and the “special military operation” is the Donbas counter-attack against it, the latest episode of that old war.

Teaching a lesson to the european vassals, who seemed a bit too ready to sell-out to the PRC and use it to counter-balance USA elite influence, is important and useful too, but it is a welcome side-effect, not the aim of the proxy-war against the Donbas.
Russians do not have air superiority?
They have had air supremacy within 48 hours of the war. Most of the Ukrainian army is destroyed, not 48%, but near 80-90%+ They will likely have lost 250k+ men by end of August.
Russians haven’t advanced, because they are trying to keep casualties at a minimum, Russia’s 2k losses, majority were in the first 2 weeks due to the rapid advance in the “feint’ maneuver.
It is very difficult to move less than 200k men in a such a large area without exposing flanks, and being targeted by partisan/guerilla/SBU forces, which is what the UAF now is. Russia invaded while being massively outnumbered, now they are now near parity in numbers, or even inferior to Russia, LPR, DPR military. Ukrainian elite units have been captured or destroyed, even the propaganda 59th brigade has been annihilated, hundreds of them died in a indirect fire event, no more trophy videos from them. Most of the remnants are being filled by Territorial defense militias, and foreign mercenaries, 10k+ of them have be losses..
The war is long because Zelensky is a puppet who holds no power, like Hitler, he is a an actor for Jewish/western powers who want to throw Ukrainian men into the meat grinder of Russian artillery, and their women whore themselves in the west. Ukrainian men and western men in generally are just ignorant and apathetic to their leader decisions.

In Ukraine, the women ARE WHORED OUT as a mass business. For decades. For the wast majority of them, it was not a choice if they wanted to have food on the table the next day for themselves (some) or their kids (more often). For a young women there, the situation is (and was) often way worse than in the poorest countries of Africa where there is at least the social net of tribes to fall onto.

Are you okay? Just the first point, if Russians had air supremacy, they would shoot down cruise missiles / HIMARS etc, are you saying they’re intentionally letting rockets fly through? There would be massive amount of airstrikes from RU side then, look at Syria situation where planes are used…
Even if you have total air supremacy, you can’t stop Ukrainians from shipping missiles from NATO countries into the Ukraine and firing off missiles from random locations, from near civilian homes, Russia is avoiding civilian casualties as much as possible. Thesaker mentions this in his post.
I can understand why there is confusion in your mind. After 20 years in the military in tactical and operational areas of expertise it is still hard to understand the modern battlefield. Most of the newer weapons are integrated with each unit through secure electronic channels, and the technology changes rapidly. However, a study of modern warfare helps to bring the pieces together, and to understand the thinking of the Russian mindset integrating it into the overall operation. The Russian looks at a Ukrainian as a type of Russian, or a brother that is being psychologically played to hate and kill Russians by his leadership. The Russian doesn’t want to kill his brother, but he must fight him in self defense to protect his nation and families.
You are mostly correct. The Russians, Germans, Japanese and the muslim world have proven time and time again to fight to the finish, by all means necessary. Modern warfare is not entirely different from historical warfare, the principles have remained the same, it is only the instruments and banners that have changed.
This war is prophetic in nature, and as a student of science as well as religion, I think there is more to it than what meets the eye. This war is both symbolic and literal. The collective west has been trying to provoke a nuclear war with Russia for nearly a century now. Why? Because they have been brainwashed to believe that the next evolutionary step for mankind is to be united under one world government, with one currency, one language and one religion. This mindset has taken many shapes, whether it be capitalism or communism. Remember that the Tzar of Russia did not receive any help from his royal cousins in England or other parts of Europe, they let their extended family perish, so yes the USSR was in fact an evil step child of the west, existing only to serve one purpose, a bogeyman.
After the planned collapse of the USSR, the collective west celebrated, thinking that now it would be a lot simpler to unite the world, especially since everyone outside their sphere was/is poor and in need of “loans”, which cost them their sovereignty. Those that stood tall against this “debt trap” enslavement were invaded, regime changed, and ultimately “re-educated” into becoming western puppet states. Forget the middle east, just look at Germany and Japan. They failed at turning Russia and China corrupt enough to agree to this plan.
You must give the west credit for their intelligence in developing nefarious plans. The current economic decline was planned, as was the pandemic, and many other world changing events that occurred “overnight”. These are not conspiracies, so long as when you ask “who benefited the most” and the answer is the “west”, just look at who gained most from 9/11, OBL/AQ sure didn’t.

Here is where it gets tricky, no one world government can exist if nuclear weapons are in the hands of those that oppose it, why do you think they are okay with some having it but not others.
#8 Make nuclear war “winnable” (this is going to backfire for them), so that all parties are left without nukes, but the “collective west” still has sufficient dominance to control the world.
#9 Survive the nuclear war, take control of the world’s energy source in the middle east, and food.
#10 Offer commodities to those willing to become vassals, and starve those that are in opposition.
This is the plan, mark my words we will see a nuclear war in our lifetime to achieve it. Right now we are in the slow and painful buildup. But this is not a linear progression, it is exponential, so I expect a nuclear war within Biden’s 4 years, so most likely next year.
Just think about what “build back better” means, and why there is a female vice president.

This does not mean, however, that the status quo does not benefit Russia in the sense that it keeps commodity prices (both energy and soft-commodities) elevated despite a looming global recession.
Look at Russia’s trade surplus in recent months, despite massive discounts on its oil exports. And not to mention the value of food exports (that which is still being exported and not banned due to domestic restrictions). Of course Russia will weather this crisis far better than the west.

It is very easy to boycott russian fuel supplies during summer. In the dreams of the european elites before their fuel stocks run out there will be a “color revolution” or a “democratic coup” in Moscow and the issue will disappear, but don’t be surprised if that does not happen and the european elites suddenly very cynically create giant loopholes in their boycott of russian fuel supplies just before winter.
It is a contest as to who can last longer, and the current RF position seems to be is to ensure that the european elites cannot accumulate fuel stocks during summer to extend their ability to last into the winter.

One might ask who wouldn’t like to see an end of the conflict? Most of us would. But there is an unfortunate answer to the question. The Ukrainians not only don’t want to stop this madness and accept the loss of the Donbass, they want to reclaim Crimea, and have shown no willingness to accept mutually agreeable terms. How can any progress toward ending combat be made while that continues.
I agree that the current Russian tactic is a slow war, but of course it is not a Russian decision alone! Multiple variables decide which scenario we arrive at. The positions and actions of the West and Ukraine, China, the whole world, the tangible results of these actions, the trajectories resulting from these actions etc. have resulted in the current scenario, which of course was is one of multiple possible scenarios forecasted before the SMO.
I think the key to understanding the situation is that the overarching mission of Russia is a multi polar world in which it can be relatively free of Western hegemony. There is also an understanding that the transition from Western hegemony to multipolarity has to occur at a realistic, slow pace, otherwise there is a risk that the Western elites may take irrational drastic actions, even unto nuclear war.
Given this, I think Russia now thinks it is in a good equilibrium where the war is proceeding slowly but efficiently and effectively, Andrei’s pain dial is being turned up at a reasonable and steady rate, the West continues its overall downward trajectory, and the ‘rest of the world’ – Russia, Asia, Africa, Latin America – have sufficient time to adjust politics and economies towards multipolarity.
Now, consider If Russia increases the scale and tempo of the war. This might encourage Western politicians to escalate, rallying their populations, then forcing Russia (and perhaps China) to escalate, all in all disrupting the preferred transition to multipolarity.
I think that is where we are now. Of course Russia and everyone else is continuously re-assessing.

Another reason is to minimize Russian casualties. Too many dead bodies makes for bad publicity and the public support is fickle. They are inflicting 7:1 to 10:1 losses with this slow grind so why go faster?
The goal is also much bigger than just Ukraine. The economic front is the big one. If they can lower the reserve currency status even 10-20% away from the US dollar over a 3-5 year war then that will do more damage than all wars since WW2 combined.
@Dan Farrand: There is a difference between air supremacy and air superiority. Contrary to what you say, Russia has air superiority in Ukraine. It doesn’t have air supremacy. I just learnt that Biden regime had been arming the Ukrainians with small amounts of High-Speed Anti-Radiation Missiles (HARM), which can be used against Russian air defences. These are some of the reasons why Russia has not been able to reach the threshold of air supremacy.
In fact, air supremacy cannot be achieved, even theoretically, against modern air defenses.
However, to say that the airspace over the Ukraine is contested is also false, as it makes it sound as if Ukrainian aircraft can challenge the Russian Aerospace Forces, which is false.
Russia has both air superiority and supremacy in Ukraine. Russia can hit any target at anytime, however Russia chooses not to strike civilians and civil targets. Even low value military targets where collateral damage would cause civilians to be injured or killed are not to be hit. This is exactly what the human rights inspection of the battlefield said Ukraine forces were doing and Russia was not doing.

No it doesn’t have supremacy as it won’t fly bombers over Ukraine for fear of them being shot down. The bombers could target Ukrainian forces and weapons more precisely.
Also Ukraine still has fighter jets, and Russia claimed it just shot down 3 of them. By my estimates Russia has shot down at least 300 Ukrainian fighter jets since the first week or so, so saying the Ukrainian air force was “destroyed” already in the first week was mistaken.
The Ukrainian Air Order of Battle, before hostilities began, was under 150 fighter jets.
Then they must be getting them from other countries, because I noticed Russia reporting almost 2 Ukrainian fighter jets per day. I even started counting them in later April (April 17) and did that to late May. However, I wasn’t strict and some days I didn’t check. So a lack of a date doesn’t mean there weren’t any shot down in the missing days.
Anyhow I have a list of translation of what Russia reported and though I count 46 in the 42 days, there are many days (gaps) where I didn’t check (April 20-29), May 3, 4, 11, 13-15, 17, 19, 20, 22, 25 – so 21 days I didn’t (necessarily count). Deduct 21 from 46 days you have 25 counted days.
So 46 planes shot down in 25 counted days when the war has been going on for 168 day. (I did notice a lack of planes reported being shot down for the last week, but then 3 were reported again today.)
So here is my list of 25 days, with the total number of fighter jets reported shot down that day parenthesis:

Russia can not do this because there is every type of normal civilian commerce happening at all the same border crossings. Trade, tourism, humanitarian assistance, howitzers, ammo, combat gear, they are all on the same trains and using the same roads. The West has no qualms about shielding these shipments with civilians. So far, Russia’s tactic is to wait until the military gear is separated from the civilians further inland, then attack.
Even to a layman it seems that bridges should be disabled. It could be done at night. While it would bring inconvenience to civilians, it would be inconvenience many degrees lower from, say, destruction of electric plants or hospital. On the other hand, bridges over Dnieper seem really essential to Ukrainian war effort in Donbass.
Ditto for so called electricity substations which power said trains.
Technically, doing so is a war crime. Perhaps especially so since there is no declared war here. We’ve become accustomed to destroying civilian infrastructure by the way the US wages war. Other have pointed out some reasons for why Russia has not done so, and they’re all valid reasons. The kremlin is quite legalistic and knows that behaving the way the US does would bring howling condemnation from Oceania. Lastly, Russia is showing to the rest of the world that it is not the US in terms of behavior. The sanctions don’t work because most of the world doesn’t implement them; most of the world doesn’t implement them because it sees all this quite differently than Oceania portrays it. Russia has much international goodwill, the new boss acting just like the old boss is the fastest way to erode that.
I think your questions are legitimate & no doubt thought off by many who support Russia & China. A question I have continuously is why Russia has not stated that the Countries Sending weapons would be targeted. After all it is deliberate & with intent to damage & injure Russians !

The main difference with USA wars are the people. If the USA would liberate Canada, they would act differently than in Iraq and other places. Because Canadians are the same as Americans. Today articles in Slovenia: Russia will destroy Zaporožje power plant by switching it off the Ukrainian grid and connecting it to the occupied grid. (Just for information: half ours nuclear power plant was switched off from Croatian grid 20 years ago. Nothing was destroyed, only the state had to pay for this with interests.) So we are near nuclear catastrophe. This topic lasts for about a week and all Slovenian nuclear scientists and burocrats are invited. With constant exposure of the Nonrussians to propaganda such questions starts. It would be great if we would be looking at great progress on maps. But instead the progress is slow and we see and hear Zelensky everywhere and anytime.

Progress is slow because Russia didn’t send enough troops to tackle the job. The DPR have been doing most of the fighting and their lack of enough manpower is why they have trouble making quick progress. Even Russians on Telegram think Russia needs to send more forces to help, if not a conscription, they need to get more volunteers.
Meanwhile, U.S. and NATO countries have been pouring in money and weapons and mercenaries to help support Ukraine’s government and military.

I wonder where you got the transmission capacity, because after an emergency synchronasing of the ukrainian grid with that of the eastern EU in (maybe, i do not remember) march the capacity was 100 MW and just very recently it was increased to 240 MW.
Under present konditions tens of GW will be needed if the winter gets really cold, but the western and the eastern grids have low exchange capacity, so even if the interconnection capacity between Ukraine and Romania would increase it would not help France or Italy.
The capacity loss from Russia to Finland is 1,3 GW, and just a portion of that got electricity prices in Finland and Sweden to soar when the wind gets lazy… in the middle of the summer.
Besides, under a previous winter Belarus had to help Ukraine because Ukraine got short on coal, so i wonder if – while war being raging – Ukraine could export a single kW on a cold day.

Major General Carlos Branco last sunday night in CNN-Portugal made a comment that I quote from memory:
This is one of the better military summaries that has been posted on any site, Andrei, including the ones posted here by your former associate whose name escapes me. A couple of points:
1. The numbers of KIAs have been vastly inflated by both sides for propagandistic purposes. The truth is in this kind of ground warfare casualites are slow and steady and not dramatically incurred. I would be surprised if the Russian dead much exceeded 10,000 soldiers to date, with over half of those occurring in the north in the early days of the SMO largely to ensure versimilitude for the UA forces to maintain a robust defense. I would also doubt the UA dead to have exceeded 60,000 to date. That suggests a 5-1 to 6-1 superiority ratio for the RF, which is impressive but not so impressive as to be fanciful.
2. The reason there has not been no dramatic movement in the line of contact in the DNR since the SMO began is twofold: first, because the RF has only provided modest assistance to the DNR and second because the UA concentrated most of their troops in this area. This is in contrast with the LNR, which had much less of a concentration of UA forces. This tells you everything you need to know about both sides’ strategic operations.
3. The UA’s strategic concept (2014) was essentially to create conditions on the ground that would buy time for NATO to open a front against the RF. In that they were misled by the U.S., who will never open such a front absent a Russian advance into central Europe. It appears the UA has no secondary strategic concept.
4. The RF’s stragetic concept (2020) has been to deconstruct the Ukrainian state, beginning in the south. The reason why the line of contact in the DNR has not witnessed many dramatic shifts is that the RF has no interest in doing so until ALL of the Black Sea coastal region is under full Russian control. When it turns its attention to the Odessa region there will be a Western reaction, because that brings the RF to the border of Romania. It is unclear what that response will be, though it will likely involve Kaliningrad and be politically (though not necessarily militarily) provocative.
What all this means is that the Donetsk is in reality a diversion. Russia accomplished its goals in the Azov when it took Mariupol. The key to the RT’s strategy for taking Odessa is to isolate it from attacks from any fortified base, and that largely means Nikolaev. It should take about 4 months to create a new line of contact from Nikopol to Nikolaev, which happens to be the duration which the RF promised to the UN not to attack Odessa from the direction of the Black Sea. I expect Odessa will be cut off from the north and northeast sometime after New Years, with the onset of winter as a strategic ally on the Baltic and Eastern European border.

As regards the issue of Polish and Hungarian interest in the Ukrainian territories, i would make a stronger distinction between the two.
Hungary comes across as a ‘rational actor’ which will coordinate reasonably with Russia. They have already issued Passports to Hungarian ethnics in the Ukraine..they have already engaged in the educational system and they have ‘absorbed’ many Ukrainians who fled from being called-up already after 2018…
Poland is a far more volatile and unpredictable crowd. They would have more territory to gain, if they played their cards right…
Maybe this is a golden opportunity for Russia to say to Poland that they can have their old lands back within the Ukraine, provided they surrendered Pommerania and Silesia as well as Stettin, back to German sovereignty……provided both Poland and Germany ejected NATO…
The problem with this analysis is that its only land now. After the Second World War all the Germans were ejected from Silesia and Pomerania. For good or evil they are truly Polish lands now, just as East Prussia is truly Russian. It is the same problem with the Baltic States, only much more ancient in nature: they are truly Baltic in nature, at least around the coasts. It will take war and depopulation to change that. You raise some good points. But we have many Poles here in the UK and i have often asked them how they feel about Pommerania and Silesia. Apparently the Poles use a mocking terminology for anyone who lives in these former German territories. As to why mocking, it has to do with a feeling that the ‘new’ immigrants into these areas are not integrateable into Polish culture. The German people may have gone but the remaining buildings are still very Germanic, so the Poles who move in, feel as if they are only there temporarily. The German ‘feel’ of the land, does not make them comfortable to be there. I know many German families whose Grandparents were ejected from Pommerania and Silesia, and the grandchildren state that they would love to move back there….a case of Ostalgie, which might just help to drive a resettlement if it were achieved… The exiled Balts also kept their Ostalgie alive with cruise ship trips before 1990 but the Russian population have always been the more economically active players there since 1945….
But i think you are totally correct. Russia has no need and now, no wish, to make any concessions that could improve the interests of NATO countries. Maybe Hungary will take the hint and be the first to eject NATO, in which case they would have a sympathetic ear from Russia …but Russia would not trust Poland as much.

Concerning the war, during the day I regularly google search war news. Problem is, Ukie state media articles always show up at the top of the google results. You know what I’m talking about, sites like Ukrinform, New Voice of Ukraine, Ukrainska Pravda, among others.
Does anyone here know of any ways to rig search engines so they automatically block certain sites from showing on the return list? Can something like that be done to google?
Maybe I’m too lazy to research the issue myself. Either way, if anyone here’s Internet savvy and knows filtering search results, kindly educate me.

Greiner goes against the grain in stating an ‘American Way of War’ that is different and less palatable from the popular view held in the American mind which sees the US military as something of a noble organisation and thus thank every person in uniform that they meet ‘for their service’, ad nauseum.
I first read it at the start of Gulf War 2 in order to understand ‘shock and awe.’ The thing that made me buy the book was the epigraph, a quote from Conrad’s ‘Heart of Darkness’, to wit:

The comparison between USA and Russia is valid to certain areas only. Many places in USA were pretty empty when they were conquered. What Russia owns todays, e.g., the far east and north east were pretty empty when they were conquered by the Russia Empire as well. In that sense, it is equivalent. However, other places, already populated, is another issue.
The Russian Empire was not into integrating people and cultures, to be honest, so I don’t even expect to have such standards, let alone that most of the south of the Russian Empire was conquered in the 1800, and they were to certain extend populated; those wars (to conquer the south) took decades by the Russian Empire to be acquired. The issue is that the Soviet Union solidified such cultural separations. I would understand at the beginning as the newly formed Soviet state was weak, but after 70 years!!….it is the arrogance of the left, that makes them think they carry the untimely truth. The Soviet constitution should have been emended after the WWII or so. Again, I can only explain it due to the left arrogance.
The United States is in a different situation, as most of the people in the states come from other countries. Sure, USA has programs to encourage people to move to different places but those more family oriented groups, e.g., Italian and other Hispanics, tend to be clustered themselves, making it harder. This explains the reason of Spanish as a strong language in certain areas, e.g., in Miami; but despite that, Miami is more “American”, in the sense of the letter of the US constitution and its philosophy than other places in USA. Again, this boils down to the reason of why people MOVE to USA. They were not conquered but move to USA in search of freedom. But when it comes to conquered already populated places, people tend to forget that USA did conquer the entire Mexico, but because its population and cultural differences, the USA leaders decided not to stay there. Let us be honest and fair.
Sure, it takes work to embeds different cultures into one, and no need to repress one other another one, but find a common good. After all, human only care about having a good life. There are good example of that, even within Russia today, but also in USA. However, many leaders have been lazy or naive or passive or similarly not to take into consideration that other nations will play the ethnicity card to split other countries.

I think this analysis is pretty bang on, so I won’t quibble over details as I am a layman in the military area. The only thing I will add, and I hope it is an addition, is that it seems fairly obvious where the mid term obligations of the SMO must be. I say ‘obligations’ because they have been admitted as such by VV Putin, S Lavrov, Peskov, etc…For example, the admission that Ukraine took advantage of the ‘goodwill withdrawal’ from Bucha to stage a massacre partly with old corpses and sadly, partly with freshly murdered Russian speakers/supporters who wore white armbands. This incident in particular meant that Russia had to commit to permanently keeping all liberated territories, and is obliged to continue this. If you follow P Lancasters/ G Phillips’ interviews with liberated populations, their main fear is that the Russians will leave, thus letting the killers back in.
Again, the recent interview with the Azov press officer from the subsequently bombed prison camp showed that Arestovich, and by implication Zelensky, are completely guilty of ordering the torture and murder of Russian POWs at least as early as March 1st 2022. Thus, liberating Ukranians from the ‘elensky regime is another obligation that has been acknowledged.
The Russian central command must know far more than any of us here, and so must know how close the Kiecv regime is to collapse, i.e. very close, and they must have planned for what they will do when that collapse happens.

I believe that the above will be the biggest long-term result from the SMO, via the follow-on US/UK/EU (NATO) financial actions. It is one thing (in other nations’ eyes) to sweep-up the assets of a minor nation for some ‘transgression’. It is quite another to freeze/seize/confiscate the assets of a Major Player. That causes a “this could happen to me” reaction, which in-turn leads to serious contemplation of withdrawing from that System.
On the one hand, this could lead to a separate, multi-state-administered financial system. The Russians, Chinese, and perhaps Iranians & Indians seem to be in the early stages of formation of this kind of system.

The tempo of the SMO depends in part on the financial collapse of the West. Neither the Russian Federation nor China can afford to see the insane leadership of the West continue and recover. If necessary the takeover of Taiwan by force will be carried out. This will be the coup de grace for the West. But the resulting destructuring could have very serious consequences.
Therefore, at the same time as the West is collapsing financially, an alternative must be offered so that those who leave the Titanic are not left alone.
In other words, the collapse of the West must be counterbalanced by the creation of an alternative. Will these two simultaneous and opposite movements be completed by the spring of 2023? Or will a 2nd winter be necessary.

The financial system is not an illusion. It is based on trust, it is immaterial but not an illusion. This system allows the USA to finance its budget deficit for free, which is nominally very close to the gigantic budget of its armies. The world will be free of the US threat when this free lunch stops. It seems to me that then the size, therefore the threat of the US army will drop drastically.
The financial system of the west is based on credit in US$. More credit can collapse the system and reinforce the control of the elites if there is no alternative to get out of this circle. In order for the exchange of material goods to continue, an electronic payment system must be created. It may be, and I think it is even necessary, but I am no one in this matter, that the President of the Russian Federation makes an announcement this fall at the Vladivostok forum. For Iran, China, Russia, India and Turkey, exchange in national currencies is a possibility. But to connect Africa and South America to the new world, I believe that a new reserve value is needed. Because if the new system works on national currencies, the establishment of a foreign exchange market for many currencies is not possible in such a short time.
Money is a claim on future energy/resources. In 2008, the financial collapse was averted by doubling down on money/debt creation. The world did the same during Covid – money/debt creation to get us through the pandemic. There is now such a mis-match between money in circulation and energy/resources that something has to give. I can see how letting Hungary take back their small ethnic areas in Western Ukraine might be a good idea. As long as they don’t go across the Carpathians. But Poland has very few ethnic Poles in Ukraine left from the pre-war numbers. And those aren’t clustered in groups along the borderline that could be ceded to Poland. And since the Romanians (unlike the Hungarians) aren’t at all friendly to Russia.It would be a bad idea to reward their Russophobia by giving them any territory.If Western Ukraine was to fall to NATO they would make it into a propaganda “piedmont” for a “Ukrainian” resistance state.During what they’ve done in Iraq and Syria with the Kurds there. Train them as soldiers,terrorists,and spies. And send them back into the liberated territories to cause pain to Russians.
The issue of Western Ukraine needs to be solved finally. Those that can live in peace be allowed to continue to live there. Those that are totally nazi supporters,be removed from the region. Either force them out into Poland,transfer them to other areas as the Poles did to their Ukrainian minority. Or adopt a modified policy similar to the Chinese Uyghur policy of reeducation and try to salvage the next generation. I’ve been watching the latest Lira Roundtable. I’ve confirmed a suspicion I’ve had for a while now. Dima at the Military Summary channel is a Ukrainian supporter. He tries to be neutral and report the facts. So I still will watch his reporting. But now I see I was right all along about his true loyalty. It seems his wife is West Ukrainian from a Russophobe family,with her brother fighting in Donbass against Russians.
And that makes him what ….everything he says can be fact checked within a few days….and he has to sleep with his wife every night…..he walks the fence, if ones spouse switched religion or political affiliation, does one look for a new spouse or does one compromise …..33 yrs and counting for me, easy answer.

He has a few moments where when the Ukrainians claim something he seems to accept that. But 99.9% of the time he is neutral. But from the Lira Roundtable it seems to me clear where his sympathies lay.I just think when listening to his analysis of future moves we should understand that. As for his daily reports of ongoing events,I think we can accept that reporting fully.
I just want to say that I appreciate your blog and the logical consistency of your thoughts. It took me 5 decades of constantly learning from a foolish mindset created by the western lack of a complete education and propaganda. I have found that people like yourself and others are searchers for the truth no matter where it leads, which is a rare trait it seems.

Basically, there are two possibilities. It could be that the Russians are happy with these weapons and ammo being transported to the East since that allows them to destroy these weapons and ammo at a convenient distance from their own borders. Given it is so, then the SMO is conceived to be much longer-lasting and wider-ranging than is currently believed by most. That would make a lot of sense since, even with all of Ukraine taken, Russia would still have to worry about US missile bases in Poland, the Czech Republic and Romania, and about the US presence in all of Europe, for that matter. But it could also be the case that Russia finds it too difficult to stop the flow of weapons and ammo to the East for variou reasons.

I am sometimes asked the same questions (usually in a batch) & I am not always able to formulate the answers correctly in time to prevent the discussion from veering off into the bush.There is one problem with the slow progress of the Russian military operation – it is that not only Russians gradually learn and refine/adjust their tactics – but that the NATO command of the Ukrainian forces learns & improves their tactics too. The result at some point might be a sudden escalation of the conflict to the nuclear – with the US and NATO, not, of course with the Ukraine, and it seems the “western” media already started preparing the public for it.

There are several limitations in term of space, as there is no one section of the blog dedicated to the war, and only when there is an official Sit-Rep, a post by the Saker, or an Open Thread, I can do it.

There is this one: https://liveuamap.com/ but of course that only gathers information from western sources, mainly the UAF, and is necessarily coy about admitting disappointing losses.
There are also various you-tube channels that show maps from elsewhere, but I’d rather go the source to see the latest situational representation.
Dimi (Military Summary youtube channel) seems to use MiltaryMaps as well as the afore-mentioned liveuamap, but I’ll be buggered if I can find it even with a VPN using a Russian server.

But looking at it geographically, a full “annexation” including western Ukraine / Lvov-area may expose too much border perimeter into the rest of Europe (making defense of “full-Ukraine” difficult for the Russians)…
If NATO had a thought they have any chance of confronting the Russian offensive and stopping their advances at the beginning of SMO, NATO forces under disguise of UN peace keepers would be in Ukraine in early March.
However the preparedness of EU NATO defences were shuttered by an old rusty drone penetrating their air space almost 800 km deep and flying the full hour over three NATO countries without being seen, or heard not to mention intercepted and shoot down.
If they couldn’t organise this small and in military sense a trivial task facing Russian troops would be a suicidal mission as it is proven now in Ukraine throughout the current situation on the ground.
If the biggest and the most armed and trained by NATO army cannot stop SMO the rest of EU NATO allies armies would be just sitting ducks vaiting to be slaughtered.
It wasn’t really mentioned here but it’s important to remember that Ukraine isn’t the only card that the West has to play against Russia. This year has already seen conflicts around Russia in Karabakh, Kazakhstan, Karakapaklstan and Badakhshan. ISIS is dangerously growing in the north of Afghanistan. The Armenian government as well as Kazakhstani oppose any prorussian demonstrations. Antirussian mood is growing among Kazakhs which makes it clear that one day this country will explode and Russia will have to intervene.
Also, decolonization of Russia agenda in the West becomes more obvious. There are numerous organizations like free Buryatia, free Bashkiria and so on are created by the ethnic minorities in exile. All ‘liberal’ NGOs and news agencies relocated to Europe and operate from there. This whole process cannot be underestimated.
